Wilna Nell Lucas, 81, passed away May 25, 2014 in Waco, Texas. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 27, 2014 in Blair-Stubbs Chapel with Mr. Joe Lucas officiating. Interment will follow in the Shiloh Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be 5-7 p.m., Monday, at Blair-Stubbs Funeral Home. Nell was born November 18, 1932 in Amarillo, Texas to Lewis George and Minnie Wilna Morton Daugherty. She graduated from Seminole High School in 1950. On September 18, 1952, at 7:30 in the morning, she married Benny Lucas. After becoming the mother of four children, Nell continued her education. She graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in 1971 and a Master’s degree in Elementary Education and Library Sciences in 1983. Nell began her teaching career with the Mexia ISD at the Forest Glade School in 1971. From 1974 until 1983, she taught at Ross Elementary School and then McBay Elementary School. She completed her 29 year career with the Mexia ISD as librarian at the Mexia Junior High School in 2000. In addition to a teaching career and raising her children, she and her family raised a large vegetable garden and peach orchard. She was a longtime member of the Shiloh Church of Christ, where she served as a Sunday school teacher. She also served as a 4H activity sponsor. She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jones Daugherty; and sister, Anna Beth Knight. Nell is survived by her husband of 61 years, Benny Lucas of Mexia; four children, Benny Wayne Lucas, Jr. and wife, Ellen of Harper; Kathleen Elaine Reaves and husband, Lee of Wylie, Wilna Marie Durham and husband, Chuck of College Station and Anna Pat Alpert and husband, Ken of Mexia; 10 grandchildren, David Lucas Cartwright, Benjamin Lee Cartwright, April Lucas-Chain, Seth Alpert, Charlotte Hierholzer, Samantha Murphy, Jonathan Durham, Hannah Bennett, Kaitlyn Reaves and Rebekah Reaves; nine great-grandchildren, Trevor Cartwright, Emily, Olivia, Abigail and Sarah Bennett, Cason and Breck Alpert, Trace Hierholzer and Ara Chain. Pallbearers will be David Cartwright, Benjie Cartwright, Seth Alpert, Chris Murphy, Jonathan Durham, Kyle Bennett, William Hierholzer, II and Ky Chain.
