Velma Clare Cain

On Wednesday, April 29th, 2020, Velma Clare Cain passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 95. Velma was born on June 3,1924 on a small farm in Rosedale, British Columbia. She immigrated to the United States to train as a cadet nurse at the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital during World War II. She worked as a Registered Nurse there for over forty years. From a young age, Velma knew she wanted to be a nurse and she spent her entire life caring for both her patients, friends and family. Her efforts often went above and beyond the call of duty as she spent hours in waiting rooms or provided extra care overnight for family, church family and friends during hospitalizations. On May 5th, 1950, she married Ray Cain at the Stone Church in Independence, Missouri. She spent seventy years by his side. She was an ordained priest of the Community of Christ Church and was active at the East Independence, Blue Ridge, and Pleasant Heights Congregations for many years. She served as the church recorder and always took the time to make new members of the congregation feel welcome by reaching out and visiting them in their homes. For as long as she was able, she kept busy volunteering at many places such as the Laurel Club, the Kirtland Temple and Camp Quality. She loved to read biographies and cookbooks, travel, spend time with her friends and family and was widely known for her amazing dinner rolls. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Jane Muirhead and her three sisters, Mae Bayne, Alice Fredenberg and Vivian Provost. She is survived by her loving husband Ray Cain, her three children and their spouses (Debi and Mike Hale, Cindy and Bob Upjohn, and Larry and Joy Cain), seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and other bed Memorial visitation will take place from 5-8pm, Wednesday, June 3rd at Speaks Suburban Chapel. Donations can be made in her honor to either the Good Shepherd Community of Christ Church or Crossroads Hospice. Velma was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed. She was a woman of faith with a subtle sense of humor, strong will, and a selfless nature. As her husband likes to say, she was one "classy lady."
